Fear of the Lord
David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” - 2 Samuel 6:9
After God struck and killed Uzzah for touching the Ark of the Covenant, David feared the Lord. He could not understand why God would have killed Uzzah when he was just trying to help God. His intentions were good, but God still killed him.
David was not thinking. He was reacting to God’s actions instead of thinking about where he went wrong. He knew the Lord and he knew something had to be wrong for God to strike Uzzah. He should have sought the Lord before moving the Ark. He should have checked with the priests before loading the Ark onto a cart. He should have respected the holiness of the Lord and His holy things.
Today, one of the problems in the church is a lack of respect. There is no respect for the holiness of God, because of the condition of the church and the condition of church leaders. People are more worried about what people think instead of having the fear of the Lord.
It is so important to understand, if you do not respect God—if you do not have the fear of the Lord—there will be huge consequences. I am not saying God is going to strike you dead, but you will miss out on the blessings of God and His plan for your life, if you do not respect Him, His Word and the things holy to Him. Not one of us can be angry with God for anything, for He is in control of everything. We are wrong, not Him—He is never wrong.
But what is the fear of the Lord? It is that affectionate reverence by which the child of God bends himself humbly and carefully to the Father’s Law.
