Mother’s Day

…do not forsake the law of your mother; for they [instruction, and doctrine] will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck.
Proverbs 1:8-9

As a world-wide pandemic is raging among us, during such a difficult time, mothers are of great significance and influence. Children are at home; they are not spending hours and hours in school. Even though many children are engaged in online learning, there is now a wonderful opportunity to teach children more about the law of God––the Holy Scriptures, and to train them up in the ways of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6).

Mothers can teach them about God’s creation and tell them Bible stories about the heroes of the faith. Pass on your faith to your children. This was an important factor in the life of Timothy, who became a young minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle attributed Timothy’s spiritual growth and faith to the influence of his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice: when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Timothy 1:5). Through their diligent training of Timothy, he came to know and serve God.

As tempting as it may be to allow children to spend hours watching television or to be fully engaged on computers and phones, limit the time. Make sure to take full advantage of this season to pour into your children. It is important to use our time wisely: See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-16).

Then later on in life, and even in a mother’s absence, her teachings will always be something her grown children will reflect upon. They have truly been given by their mothers a spiritual adorning, as if given rare jewels and chains of gold around their necks.

It could be we may not be able to be with our mothers on Mother’s Day this year, but we can still honor our mothers on this very special day.

I cannot tell you how much I owe to the solemn word of my good mother.
~C. H. Spurgeon~
