Sin in Human Speech

“Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “the poison of asps is under their lips”; “whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Romans 3:13-18

Paul continued to reveal sin in the human speech. He described the throat as an open tomb––nothing but death comes out of it. It stinks! Have you ever smelled a dead body? It is a horrible smell, especially after a couple of days; you have to wear something over your mouth or you will throw up! Their throat is like an open tomb,; it smells–– it is just like a sewer.

Then Paul thoroughly described a human’s sinful nature. People practiced how to lie and deceive others. People can be so bitter; it is as if their tongues release poison, and they begin to say such poisonous, nasty things to people. It is so horrible, and all because of their sinful hearts––sad. Paul also described their conduct––evil. These people do not fear God! If they feared God, they would not say or do such things. They would have a healthy fear of God, knowing that one day He would judge them.

Consider what God says in His Word: The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate (Proverbs 8:13). God’s Law stands the test of time, and no one will have any excuses when they stand before Him. Even if a person only reads one verse of the Bible, they will be found guilty.

Do you really fear God?

When the sins of a people reach up to heaven, the wrath of God will reach down to earth.
~Matthew Henry~
