Are You a Slave of Sin?

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
Romans 6:15-16

What does the Law do? The Law makes us guilty. It points us back to inform us we are sinners! In the Old Testament, the Law was the schoolmaster that pointed to our sin––our ungodly life. In the New Testament, we are under the grace of God, but we do not take advantage of God’s grace. A person who does not come to a place where they acknowledge their sinful nature, and they do not feel guilty about what they are doing, is abusing God’s grace, and they stand guilty of the whole Law.

We are not to be slaves of sin, but slaves of Christ. We live a life of conviction and crucify the flesh. When we are tempted to sin, the Holy Spirit sets off an alarm to warn us as if to say, “Do not do that because there are consequences to pay.” It really comes back to the will, obeying or disobeying––we make the choice. Where do we want to be, in the darkness or in the light? Do we want to suffer the consequences of spiritual death or be blessed in this life and inherit eternal life?

The nature of man is to always justify themselves instead of saying they are guilty. If you desire to get back into fellowship with God, then humbly repent. If you do not have the right attitude by stepping up to the plate to say, “I am guilty,” you are a person who is always full of excuses, and you will never truly enjoy the Cross of Jesus Christ––justification by faith and sanctification. May God speak to your heart. Convictions should bring us to our knees––to the Cross. Yet it is so hard for some people––so sad.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
