Corrupted Riches

Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.
James 5:2-3

Why would James give such a warning to the rich? His exhortation was toward those who were covetous. He knew these believers could easily trust in their finances instead of trusting in the Lord. What would happen if everything was taken away from them? People can easily say they believe in God, but when there is no money in the bank, their faith is tested.

These are very good lessons to learn. What are you going to do when you do not have money for bills, bread and milk? I have been there! That is when you have to pray, as you trust and depend on God. In difficult times, God has taught me to be a good steward of our finances. My philosophy is, “If you cannot afford it, do not buy it.”

Many people have tremendous credit card debt. Seriously, do not get into bondage to your credit cards. If you use a credit card, be wise and pay the same month, the amount you spent. That way you avoid paying high interest. It is important to be a good steward and to learn to use your money wisely.

Also learn to be a giving person. Know that you can never out give God! Biblically, we need to give to God what belongs to God (Mark 12:17). When offered sacrificially, your giving is an act of obedience and love toward God. Your motives for giving should never be to expect more in return. Remember, give to God cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Jesus is all I need but you will never know if Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have!
