The Light of the World

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16

Christians are to shine; they are the light of the world! This speaks of our relationship with Christ. Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). We are to be like Christ––a light––a witness for Him. If so, why is the Church so dark today? I believe it is because of sin in the Church. People need to repent!

Have you ever seen bright lights miles and miles away, up on top of a hill in the darkness? Believers ought to be like a light on top of a hill. That is what Christians are supposed to be like. Never hide your light! As we stand and do good works in the name of Jesus Christ, we shine like lights. That is the Christian life.

When you do good works, never take the credit or take the glory for yourself. People need to see Christ––not you! When people see your good works, they should glorify God. Always point people to Jesus Christ and not to yourself. If people begin to build up your greatness instead of God’s, you will become full of pride. Then you are set for a fall––big time. The Word of God says: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).

Honestly, to be a light to this world really goes back to the previous verses in Matthew 5. People will see the attitudes and characteristics of a child of God, only when they live according to the Beatitudes that Jesus taught them. Those in the world will see our light and praise God. Are people glorifying God because you are shining, or have they been left in the dark?

The Bible is not the light of the world, it is the light of the Church, but the world does not read the Bible, the world reads Christians! “You are the light of the world.”
