Blessed Are the Pure in Heart

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8

Notice what Jesus said to His disciples: “blessed are the pure in heart.…” I love this Beatitude. It is important to understand that to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, you have to have a pure heart––then you will see God. In heaven, we are told, They [God’s servants] shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads (Revelation 22:4). Incredible!

How can my heart be pure when the Bible states: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) The only way to have a pure heart is to place our faith in Jesus Christ. Why? We are not made pure by our own righteousness, but by His righteousness.

Pureness of heart speaks about having a single mind––your life is consecrated to God’s will. When you come to Jesus Christ, He grants you life eternally. He cleanses you from all your sins. Jesus gives you the privilege to serve and love Him. He enables you to stand true to Him with a pure heart.

It is important to know we cannot trust our hearts––we cannot. Do you read the Bible? God will reveal Himself to you in His light. He reveals Himself to us through His Word: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). We cannot walk by feelings, but only by the Word of God. Then we will be on target. The Word of God is purifying.

The Apostle Peter perfectly explains this truth to us:

Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever… (1 Peter 1:22-23).

It is safe to tell the pure in heart that they shall see God, for only the pure in heart want to.
