Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4

Jesus taught His disciples that those who mourn will be comforted. Those who truly mourn over their sins are people who are truly repentant. I believe that if a person is not spiritually bankrupt––poor in spirit––how can they be truly repentant? You cannot have one without the other. Those who are poor in spirit are the ones who mourn; they will experience the peace and comfort of God. This speaks of the Comforter––the Holy Spirit, who is the only one who can truly comfort us (John 14:26).

I know my sinful nature; my heart is wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). I will never forget what I have done for the rest of my life. Even though God has forgiven me, I cannot take back committing adultery. I know I have hurt my wife, yet she has forgiven me. I wish I had been pure. At times, I have anger and hatred in my heart. I am here because of the grace of God––period. Christ has wiped away all my sins. The devil tries to condemn me, but Christ has been so gracious; He has forgiven me––fully and completely.

We all have a sinful nature, so it is hard to be a Christian and live a righteous, moral life. Parents do not have to teach their children to sin; that comes naturally because of their sinful hearts. Parents have to teach their children what is good and right. They have to teach them how to live their lives according to God’s Word: Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

It is important to train them spiritually, teaching them the Word of God so they can survive in this wicked world. Always teach your children about God’s forgiveness. They need to know Jesus will cleanse and wash them from their sin (1 John 1:7). When anyone comes to God in true repentance, God will forgive them. Those who mourn will be comforted.

There is a blessing which often goes with mourning, itself, but when the sorrow is of a spiritual sort—mourning for sin— then is it blest, indeed!
