Son of the Highest

“He [Jesus] will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32-33

The angel Gabriel announced the miraculous birth of Christ to Mary, a young virgin. She would cradle within her womb the long awaited Messiah. JESUS, pure, sinless and divine, was named the Son of the Highest; greatness preceded Him. Augustine of Hippo had these amazing insights:

Man’s maker was made man that He, Ruler of the stars, might nurse at His mother’s breast; that the Bread might hunger, the Fountain thirst, the Light sleep, the Way be tired on its journey; that Truth might be accused of false witness, the Teacher be beaten with whips, the Foundation be suspended on wood; that Strength might grow weak; that the healer might be wounded; that Life might die.

God sent His Son incarnate to earth for our sinful sakes. Jesus, Son of the Highest, came to Redeem us––to die on the Cross––so we could be forgiven of our sins. He made a way for us to spend eternity with Him (John 14:1-3).

In God’s sovereignty, our heavenly King is associated with an earthly king. Christ’s bloodline can be traced through Scripture to the lineage of King David (Matthew 1:1-16). There will be no end to Christ’s kingdom. He is the King of kings and will remain seated on His throne forever and ever.

The Son of God became man to enable men to become the sons of God.
