A Safe Refuge
Now one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the Lord’s priests. So David said to Abiathar, “I knew that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have caused the death of all the persons of your father’s house. Stay with me; do not fear. For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe.”
1 Samuel 22:20-23
Abiathar, Ahimelech’s son, escaped the massacre of the priests. David heard the news from Abiathar that Saul had ordered Doeg to slay them. David knew he should have killed Doeg when he had the opportunity. Doeg had seen him receive help from Ahimelech the priest. David blamed himself for the innocent lives lost. However, it was not David’s fault. God would take care of the situation in His time. God would not have David take the weight of responsibility; it was not his to carry.
David reassured Abiathar of his safety. Why would the young man be safe with David? As the Lord was David’s refuge, He was also the refuge for those who stayed with him. In Psalm 46:1-3 is a description of calamities of such vast magnitude, yet God’s people are helped and sheltered:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
As long as we make the Lord our refuge, nothing or no one can harm us unless God allows it. God has always been a High Tower for me to run to and where I know I will be safe (Proverbs 18:10). It is not so for the ungodly, they have no such refuge.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
