Hide in the Shadow of Your Wings

And David stayed in strongholds in the wilderness, and remained in the mountains in the Wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand. So David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. And David was in the Wilderness of Ziph in a forest.
1 Samuel 23:14-15

David remained safe in the strongholds of the wilderness. This place may have been Masada, an isolated rock highland overlooking the Dead Sea. Even though Saul looked all over the place for David, God kept him hidden. God was sovereignly over David’s life. He did not deliver David into Saul’s hand. Why was that? David aligned himself with the perfect will of God.

In times of calamity, David hid in the shadow of the Almighty. There are times when we should not go out and confront our enemy. There are times when we simply must hide in God; where we are kept safe:

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by (Psalm 57:1).

Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
and bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words, that they may shoot in secret at the blameless; suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear (Psalm 64:2-4).

Can you remember a time when God hid you and kept you safe from your enemies?

You shall hide them [those who trust God]in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
~Psalm 31:20~
