True Servanthood

For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load.
Galatians 6:5

Paul addressed pride and self-deception in a believer’s life. The word deceives means, “wandering away from the truth.” There are situations when a leader in the church becomes prideful––puffed up. They lose the simplicity and humility of servanthood. Thinking themselves better than everyone else, they become unapproachable. Those thinking highly of themselves, to be something, in reality, they are nothing. God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34).

Leadership in the church is not about attaining a high position. In fact the greater the position, the more a person needs to be a servant––helping with the needs of others. Jesus sat down with His twelve disciples and taught them humility and servanthood: “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35). That is the philosophy of Christ: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

Paul gave wise advice to believers in Christ. Whatever you do for God examine your motives. Make sure it is for God’s glory and not your own. We each have received the Gospel of grace. The Holy Spirit enables us to serve Christ. Have you made yourself available to serve others in the body of Christ?

The highest form of worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless.
