Redemption through Christ’s Blood

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence....
Ephesians 1:7-8

Paul wrote about the work of Christ, His redemption, and the forgiveness of sins. His redemptive work relates to our lives in the past, to the present, and into the future. Each of us is likened to a slave sold in the marketplace because the debt of sin could not be paid. Jesus Christ, through His own blood, bought us; He purchased us and paid the price to redeem us. God showed us the richness of His grace when He sent His Son to die for the sins of the whole world.

In the Old Testament, the only way for the debt of sin to be forgiven was through the shed blood of an animal sacrifice. Yet it was not a permanent forgiveness––it was only a covering for sin. The blood of animals was not sufficient to take away sin (Hebrews 10:4). Christ’s precious blood redeemed us and did away with sin, once and for all: ...we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all (Hebrews 10:10 NIV).

When a person accepts Christ, repents, and confesses their sin to Him, their sin is completely erased––it is a done deal. God has forgiven them: For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God... (1 Peter 3:18 NIV).

However, Satan, who is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10), continues to throw missiles to our minds to accuse and condemn us. New believers in Christ especially may struggle when Satan reminds them of past sins they have committed: fornication, adultery, lying, or whatever sins they may have done. Understand, condemnation will always draw you away from Christ; conviction draws you to the Cross. If you are “in Christ,” you are no longer condemned––but completely forgiven.

There can be no thought of ‘cheap’ forgiveness when we remember that our redemption cost God the life of his beloved Son.
