The Golden Rule

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12

Jesus gave practical applications in His teachings. The well-known saying of treating others how you want to be treated is called the Golden Rule. Buddha taught this principle in a negative way, but Jesus taught it in a positive way. He spoke of showing true love to other people. Christians should treat people with God’s love. The way they go about doing things for them should always be motivated by love.

Think about how God intends to use our lives. He desires to pour out His love to others around us. This means we cannot be judgmental or act viciously. We are children of the light! We have to be loving and honest toward people. How in the world can we reach people for Jesus Christ if we do not love them?

Our lives need to match our beliefs. We need to practice what we preach throughout the week. What Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount is very convicting, and it should make us examine our lives. We should live lives of holiness and consecration. Our hearts need to be pure before the Lord. Look at what Jesus taught in Matthew 22:37-39:

“ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Our lives have to be pure and right before the Lord. A righteous life fits the entire Sermon on the Mount. People will be able to read your righteous life like a book. A life of holiness speaks so much louder than words.

Do you treat others the way you would like to be treated?

"While the golden rule is more admired than practiced by ordinary men, the Christian should always do unto others as he would that they should do unto him...."
~C.H. Spurgeon~
