Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver,
precious stones, wood, hay, straw . . .
(1 Corinthians 3:12)
Paul goes on to say that you can build your life either worthily or unworthily on that foundation. There are some of us who build worthily with various expensive building materials—gold, silver, and precious stones—which are rare, durable, and non-combustible. In other words, this kind of “house” cannot be consumed by fire. Some of us, however, build unworthily, using hay, wood, and straw—cheap, common, combustible material. The rabbis in the Talmud talked about men made of hay and straw, referring to those whose lives had no worth.
