. . . or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?” (Isaiah 40:12 NIV)

The industrialist Charles Beebe, a close friend of Theodore Roosevelt, often visited the presidential retreat at Sagamore Hill. One evening they went outside and Beebe pointed to a faint glow in the sky. “That’s the spiral galaxy of Andromenon. It contains a billion stars brighter than our sun.” Then Teddy Roosevelt would look at Beebe and say, “Do you think we’re small enough?” But that’s not really what Isaiah was saying. He doesn’t look at the majesty of God and say, “Look how small I am.” No, he says, “Look how great the God is who cares for me.”
