“Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird

yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch

out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where

you do not wish to go.”

                                            (John 21:18)

For Peter to feed the sheep means that he would never be his own again. Likewise, if you are a real feeder of the sheep, you give yourself away. This involves a wonderful contrast. Jesus is essentially telling Peter, “When you were young, you went where you wanted to, but you won’t in the future. I will take you where I want to take you. Ultimately, you will lay down your life for feeding the sheep.”
