. . . taking the form of a bondservant . . .

        (Philippians 2:7)

Servanthood was the expression of Jesus’ innermost nature. He was God-man, deity and humanity united as one, yet He became a servant. The picture of our Lord in John 13:1-17 is a Technicolor snapshot of Jesus taking off His robe and re-dressing in the attire of a servant. Then He took a basin of water and placed it by the feet of His disciples. On His knees, Jesus began to wash His disciples’ feet. He did not pretend to kneel, nor did He pretend to wash. This is the humble attitude of Christ.
