Understanding the Times

While partnering with a friend, Jerry, on a consulting job, Jerry shared with our client a profound insight. His statement was, “Success is the greatest impediment to greatness.”
He explained, once success settles in, it’s not uncommon for leaders to believe it’s due to their brilliance, and that their success is perpetual. As the market changes, it’s easy to be left behind if you’re not constantly looking to understand the times and adapting accordingly.
In 1 Chronicles 12 there’s an accounting of the great men who joined David in his battle against Saul. In verse 32 we learn about the, “men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.”
An excellent leader understands the times and is willing to change their approach, but not their values.
