Assurance of Salvation Part 3 – Being a Threat to Satan
Before we are saved, we are no threat to Satan. Once you are saved, that is when you become a threat to the kingdom of hell. Then the battle between your sinful nature and the Spirit that lives in you, the Holy Spirit, begins! That is why Paul says in Romans 7:18 that he has the desire to do what is good yet he cannot carry it out because nothing good lives in his sinful nature. But yet he can also say in Romans 8:10, "But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness." You see, there is a battle raging inside of you as the Holy Spirit engages your sinful nature. This battle will continue until the day you die or Christ comes again, whichever comes first. Any grief and sorrow over our sins is one evidence that we are truly saved. Sin should hurt us. It should grieve us.
We are not destined to live in sin (Romans 6:1). Sin has been defeated (Romans 8:1-2). Once saved, we must keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:17). Even when you fall back into sin, you must get back up and begin the battle anew. Surely we will take two steps forward and one step backward. True faith always moves forward. It is when we take two steps forward and three steps backward that we might want to take a look at whether or not we truly understand God’s grace.
