Consider the cost
Linda Buxa

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

Nothing is free. A buy one get one free dinner means the restaurant is willing to take 50 percent for two meals. A free day off of work means the company is willing to absorb the loss of your hours. When you consider that, what’s free to you actually has a cost. It makes a difference in your perception, doesn’t it?

That’s why the U.S. celebrates Memorial Day toward the end of May each year, to remember that what’s free to us has had a high price for almost 240 years. Veterans’ cemeteries are full of people—often teenagers—who decided they would sacrifice their personal comfort for me, for you, because they believed freedom is worth it.

This makes a difference in our perception, doesn’t it? We don’t take freedom for granted. Instead we consider the cost. We’re thankful for and respectful of those who took their oath seriously and gave it their all.

We also pray for those who are left behind. Mothers and fathers miss their children, husbands and wives mourn their spouses, sons and daughters grow up without parents. Their sacrifice is not taken for granted either.

Memorial Day is a chance to remember that our spiritual freedom also came at a great cost. A Father sacrificed his Son, and the Son sacrificed his personal comfort so everyone—soldiers included—could be free. The only difference is that Jesus’ cemetery is empty. Now you are not only free on earth, but you are free forever.

A generous donor family that’s excited about taking the timeless truths of God’s Word to more people has offered a $50,000 Matching Grant—to encourage friends like you to help match it in full.

This Matching Grant will make your gift today worth TWICE as much to help take God’s Word even further through television into areas of our country where the good news of gospel freedom is needed most.

When you give, we’ll say thanks by sending you a copy of our new book, Made for Friendship. It’ll give you insights from God’s Word to help you embrace the joys and negotiate the challenges of your friendships to make them the best they can be.
