Remember When and Where the Story Begins
Scanning through my friends on Facebook on Friday, pictures of two young women caught my eye. One grew up in our church and the other attended when she started dating the man who is now her husband. In the pictures the two young wives are radiant. One has two hands down on her stomach, carefully spaced so we can guess how far along she is. The other has her toddler propped up against her late pregnancy stomach, “One more week with just this little man…then comes another little man to join our family.” These moms are living the wonder and awe-inspiring story the psalmist recounts as he focuses our attention on the miracle that begins in what he calls the “secret place.”
“For You created my innermost self. You wove me together in the womb of my mother. I praise You! Why? Because Your handwork is awe-inspiring. I’m a wonder—wonderfully made. I know this deep within. My frame was not hidden from You, when You made me in the secret place, knit me together in the deepest depths. My unformed shape Your eyes saw, and in Your book all my days were written.” Psalm 139:13-16
As the debate rages over the Planned Parenthood videos that bring into the open what is happening as abortions take place across the country, I thank the LORD for many young women I know who are celebrating God’s gift of a baby, and I grieve over all the life stories of little ones, already divinely written, that were cut short by the destruction in the womb.
LORD, give safe deliveries to these two young moms. I can hardly wait to see the life story You have written down for these precious young lives. Deliver me from using jargon like “essential services for women,” “intact specimens,” “fetal tissue organs,” and “useable product” that impersonalize the horror of abortion and the reality that each of us started as a tiny union of egg and sperm in the secret place—a place no longer so secret with the invention of the sonogram.
