Expecting Good From God [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
You can expect good from God because God is always good.
Today’s Text: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” (Genesis 50:20, ESV)
When Joseph was a young man, God gave him a dream. The odd dream depicted Joseph and his brothers binding sheaves when Joseph’s sheaf arose and stood upright while the brothers’ sheaves gathered around it and bowed down.
Joseph’s siblings were outraged. “His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.” (Genesis 37:8, ESV)
Many years later, after Joseph has been sold into slavery, falsely imprisoned and miraculously raised up to be prime minister in Egypt, Joseph’s brothers were scared. Even after Joseph had show them kindness, the brothers panicked after their father’s death: “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died:” (Genesis 50:15–16, ESV)
The brothers just couldn’t believe that Joseph would be good to them. In their fear, the brothers“came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”” (Genesis 50:18, ESV)
The reason the brothers couldn’t believe that Joseph would be good to them was probably because they couldn’t believe God would be good to them.
At the beginning of the whole drama, there was a dream. Joseph assumed the dream was about something good that God would do. The brothers assumed that it was something bad. “Are you indeed to reign over us?” Of course, the brothers couldn’t have been more wrong about the dream. The image of the sheaves bowing down to Joseph’s sheaf wasn’t about Joseph ruling over them; it was about Joseph saving them. It wasn’t about the brothers losing something; it was about gaining something.
God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good. But if you expect nothing good from God, you will be on the lookout for shame and condemnation and you’ll miss the blessings of God along life’s journey. Joseph expected good. Joseph’s brothers expected bad.
You can expect good from God because God is good. And that’s the Gospel!
