Word and Spirit [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

If you have all Word and no Spirit, you dry up. If you have all Spirit and no Word, you blow up. But when you have Word and Spirit, you grow up!

Today’s Text: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13–14, ESV)

The Bible is God breathed. It is the only infallible rule of faith and practice.  It is the primary source for the greatest art in the history of the world. It is the inspiration of the finest music ever composed. Its verses are etched literally into the columns and corridors of our nation’s capitol. The Bible has been deemed so powerful that it is used in secular courtrooms as the proof of honesty when a witness gives his oath. It has been reckoned so influential that both Hitler and the devil have misused it. It is been viewed so threatening that religious aristocracies have kept it from ordinary readers and governmental agencies have kept it from entering country borders. It has been banned and burned and its translators killed. And, through it all, the Word of God stands. It is life-giving, imperishable, incorruptible, and endlessly deep. It is utterly timeless yet always timely. It is incomprehensible to the proud but readable to the simplest child. The Bible maybe criticized, misapplied, debated, hated, or rejected–but one thing is for sure–it cannot be ignored. It is the best selling book of all time. It is the Word of God.

The third person of the triune God is the Spirit of truth. He is the wind of God who hovered over the face of the deep at the dawn of time. He is the breath of God that fills all divine speech, making all Scripture inspired. He is the Spirit of Truth. There is no truth apart from Him. There is no understanding of the truth without Him. He is the Helper. He convicts of sin and righteousness. He produces fruit in every believer and He releases gifts in every saint. He is not a force field, an ideology, a random power, or a religious principle. He is the Spirit of Jesus. He is the presence of God on the face of the earth and in the heart of the believer. He is personal. He is awesome. He is sweet. He is powerful. He is sovereign. He is patient. His love is from everlasting to everlasting. You cannot escape him. You cannot overcome him. You cannot intimidate him. You cannot out love Him and you cannot outlive Him.  He is God with us.

The privilege and the power granted to every growing Christian is a life of balance that embraces both Word and Spirit. You don’t need to choose between Word and Spirit; you can be filled with both. And that’s the Gospel!
