God’s Intricate Design in All Creation [Part 1]

Are you ready for some good news?

God can take whatever seems chaotic and create wondrous order; God can take whatever is formless and give it glorious shape.

Today’s Text: “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2, ESV)

I love the Hebrew for the description of the earth before God created order form the chaos.

First, the formlessness, the uninhabitability of it all, is wrapped up in the Hebrew word, tohu.

Second, the condition of the earth, that it was uninhabited, empty and waiting to be filled, is expressed by the Hebrew word bohu, which rhymes with tohu.

Third, the word for and in Hebrew is wa.

So the earth was tohu wabohu. The rhythm and rhyme makes you smile doesn’t it? Tohu wabohu.

Tohu wabohu is like when you look at your teenager’s room on or about Wednesday. Tohu wabohu is when it seems like you’re career has been derailed by a corporate downsizeing.Tohu wabohu is what you feel like when you are going through a desert time and you don’t yet understand how it will ever turn out right.

When all was tohu wabohu, the Spirit of the Lord was hovering over it all. God was attending to the apparent chaos with a majestic, detailed plan in mind. He is the master at making something beautiful from tohu wabohu.

If you’re facing a hard season, you might have to say: Right now, life is tohu wabohu, but I know the Spirit of God is hovering over it all. God can make something glorious from this apparent mess. God delights in bringing order from chaos. And that’s the Gospel!
