Spirit and Intellect part 2

Are you ready for some good news?

There is no conflict between Spirit and intellect. The Spirit heightens the intellect!

Today’s text: “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:14–16, ESV)

The more I’ve walked in the Spirit, the more I have come to trust my intellect to Him. In fact, the more attuned I am to the Spirit, the more clearly my mind functions.

One of the reasons that the Spirit heightens the intellect is that joy and peace release the mind’s capacity.

Malcolm Gladwell, in What the Dog Saw, whimsically named one chapter, “Why Some People Choke and Others Panic.” I’ve done both!

The idea of “choking” is highlighted in sports. If I’m playing a great round of golf and find myself with a three foot putt left to break my lowest score ever, the very thought of how wonderful it would be to make the putt, makes me tighten up. When you are “choking,” you’re focusing on the possibility of failing. The mind doesn’t work as well when contemplating negative results.

Panic is worse. Panic makes the brain shut down all together. Some years ago, our church was frivolously sued and it brought great financial strain on the congregation and on me personally. Opposing counsel deposed me for three straight days. Early on, the lawyer asked me a simple question: “Your church is governed by 12 elders – who are those elders currently?”

My brain utter froze; I couldn’t think of one single elder! Finally, I blurted out a name of a man that, later, I realized was no longer active on the board.

When you are nervous, insecure, worried or frightened, your intellect doesn’t function very well. Thus, when you are filled with the Spirit and flooded with His peace and joy, the intellect is released to full clarity and creativity. If you surrender to the power of the Spirit, He won’t turn off your brain, He’ll turn it on. And that’s the Gospel!
