Holy Attraction [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
God doesn’t beat you and corral you into doing the right thing; He allures you. He attracts you to what is holy and good.
Today’s Text: “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20, ESV)
We’re learning more in today’s broadcast about the God moment of Holy Attraction. Simply put, every time that you have been drawn toward that which is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy, God gets the credit. Because we were born in sin, we have no other lens with which to see the world.
Left to our own devices, we make wrong choices, fleshly priorities, and destructive decisions. How can we, born in sin, ever make a good choice toward a holy path?
He has always been there alluring you toward purity and nobility. He doesn’t batter and beat and coerce. He woos, beckons, and helps.
When our son was a toddler, he wanted to walk across a brick retaining wall adjacent to the driveway. I told him not to. I told him that it was too high and I didn’t want him to lose his balance and get hurt. But he didn’t listen and couldn’t resist walking on the wall. When he slipped, he caught himself so that he didn’t crash the full four feet to the pavement. But as he grabbed the brick, his legs and side scraped terribly against the jagged brick leaving him hurting and bleeding.
He must have cried 20 minutes straight as I tried to comfort him. Eventually, he spoke:
“Now I know why you don’t want me walking on that wall.”
I didn’t need to discipline the boy. Lesson was learned.
I didn’t need to berate him. He was already stinging.
What did I want for my son? I just wanted him to walk in the way of safety. I just wanted it to go well for him. I just wanted him to stay on solid ground. Why? Because I love him with all my heart.
The Lord is a good Father. He doesn’t beat and berate. He doesn’t scold and scoff. He allures. He teaches. He holds us and leads us and welcomes us home like the father embraced the prodigal son. Every moment that you have been drawn toward a good choice is actually a God moment of Holy Attraction. And that’s the Gospel!
