As parents, we think our kids will listen when we're ready to give them the next lesson. This is not how it works. Communication flows from genuine intimacy. When our kids know we love them, a love that's proved by the fact that we actually do open our time and our hearts to our kids, then they come to us. Sometimes with teens this is late at night or returning from one of their basketball games when they lost and feel down. Suddenly their mouth opens, and it's time to open our ears to what they have to say. When we have demonstrated that we do get it and we do understand what's going on inside their lives, then it's time to share the wisdom we have lived from Proverbs.
