How do we treat our parents as they grow older and need us? How do we listen to them when they are lonely? How do we ask them for advice so that we can drink deeply from their wisdom gained by years of experience? How we answer these questions will reveal whether or not we take the fifth commandment seriously. Even when Jesus was dying on the cross, he lovingly looked down at his beloved disciple and told him to take care of his mother. The evidence that we are becoming like Jesus is when we go to visit parents every single week, sometimes every single day, and make sure they are well and safe. It's caring for them when they no longer recognize who you are. Those who honor their father and mother in these ways will hear Jesus say, “Great is your reward in heaven!"
