Today the Apostle Paul challenges us, “Follow the way of love. And eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.” If someone asks us what needs to be the primary focus of our spiritual life, what should we say? Is it to memorize every verse of Scripture, become the most effective bible study leader in our church, to pastor the largest church in the country? Paul tells us that we can reach these kinds of goals and it will amount to nothing unless I am evidencing Christ-like love in the way I treat others.
Brothers and sisters, I go back to 1 Corinthians 13 again and again, using it as my gyroscope to keep me on track about what is happening in my life. No matter how effectively we teach, how many people we might be leading to Christ, how much money we might be giving…all the things we tend to think are the essence of spirituality mean nothing if we don't live in love with Jesus and with others. Jesus desires to generate His character inside of us and nothing else compares to His 1 Corinthians 13 love.
