We need to be careful to listen to dependable advisors and one of the tests to determine the good from the bad is to recognize that wise advisors don't minimize individual responsibility. Each of us is responsible for our own life and the decisions we make. Be careful when someone says, "I've got a word from God for you." Listen, but then check out their word and see if it lines up with the Word in Scripture. Even the inspired Apostle Paul when instructing the Corinthian believers about singleness, marriage, and remarriage didn't minimize their individual responsibility for their choices. He gave them wise advice but pushed them to rely upon the Holy Spirit living in their lives and the Word of God they could read. He was a gentle shepherd who treated the Corinthian believers with loving respect, not dictatorial commands.
