The Right to Become

December 6, 2010
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father..." This being the case, we will spend a little time unwrapping them to see what He has given us. First, He has given us "the right to become the children of God."

On a door we have a hinge, but the hinge is manifested in three hinges. The hinge of the resurrection is manifested in three hinges, too - the historical hinge, the theological hinge, and the moral hinge. Not only is the resurrection of Jesus Christ the hinge of history, it is the hinge of theology. If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, all theology, all the Bible, is a joke.  If Jesus did rise from the dead, it's all truth. The moral hinge is the choice each one of us has to make when we look at the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is the final message in Pete's 6-message series "A Portrait of Jesus."

Existential questions have to do with our existence - life questions. They're usually very philosophically stated, however, the answer is very pragmatic. If we don't find an answer, we struggle with life. Pete shares three such questions and tells us right up front why the one singular answer to each of the questions is Jesus. This is the 4th message in Pete's 6-message series "A Portrait of Jesus."

Jesus is able. Jesus is ample. These are the two simple truths Pete focuses on in this message. Jesus made claims in His life that were designed to teach us that He is able to do whatever we need Him to do – and to do it completely. This is the 3rd message in Pete's 6-message series "A Portrait of Jesus."

Jesus never came out and said, "I am God." They would have stoned Him on the spot. But He conveyed who He was in so many different ways that when you put them all together it just screams, "Hey! I AM GOD!" In this message, Pete looks at the top ten crazy claims of Christ that tell us He is God. This is the 2nd message in Pete's 6-message series "A Portrait of Jesus." John 5:17-47

Often, when you ask someone about their spiritual journey, they respond with where they went to church as a child or how they we raised in a Lutheran family. Their answers are centered more on church than on Christ. But if you want to grow spiritually, you absolutely, positively have to focus on Jesus - who He is and what He did. This is the 1st message in Pete's 6-message series "A Portrait of Jesus." Luke 8:26-39

Thanksgiving means a lot of different things - it's not just a holiday. Thanksgiving is an antidote. According to the dictionary, an antidote is "a remedy that counteracts the effects of a poison." The process of giving thanks is an antidote that counteracts evil. If you are struggling with sin, it gives you the ability to avoid caving in. Giving thanks is part and parcel of the Christian life.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
