Overcoming Gut Shots - Part 1

September 22, 2010
In many situations, criticism and opposition are inevitable. This is especially true when we try to do God's work. Even within the church, people will find fault with just about anything – the length of the sermon, the style of the music, the Sunday school format, or even the color of the bulletin. In this message, Pete uses Nehemiah's actions as examples of two things we can do with criticism. This is the 3rd message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord." Nehemiah 4

Most of us have experienced starting a new job and being trained on how to complete the new duties. Without this training, it would be a lot harder to figure out what we needed to do every day. The same is true when we serve the Lord. It's easier for us to serve when we know how to do it. In this message, Pete looks into the book of Nehemiah and studies the gates of Jerusalem to give us six training lessons about how we can serve God better. This is the 2nd message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord." Nehemiah 3

God can choose the most unlikely people to carry out His plan. Moses stuttered, so God sent Him to talk to Pharaoh. Paul was a Jew, so God sent him to the Gentiles. Often times we do one thing because we think that's what God wants from us, but then He calls us into something totally different and unique. Some of us know just where God wants us to be, and some of us haven't quite figured it out yet. In this message, Pete looks at the book of Nehemiah and discusses six things about Nehemiah's sending that will help you discover yours. This is the 1st message in Pete's 9-message series After I Say "Yes, Lord." II Kings 25 & Nehemiah 1

Paul, in his letter to the Church of Ephesus, stresses the importance of being "filled with the Spirit." When we hear this, most of us think of being "full," like being full of a liquid; but this is not the type of full that Paul was referring to. In this message, Stuart explores Paul’s letter to Ephesus and teaches what it really means to be filled with the Spirit. This is the tenth message in Stuart and Jill's 10-message Bible study series on the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit can do amazing things within us, if we let Him. In this message Jill explains how we can let the Spirit change us, how we can develop the Spirit's character, how we can respond to the Spirit's call, and so much more. Learning these things can help us walk in the Spirit - not the flesh - so we can have a positive impact on the lives of those around us. This is the ninth message in Stuart and Jill's 10-message Bible study series on the Holy Spirit.

We are called to live by the Spirit so we can overcome the desires of our sinful nature. But how do we do that? In this message, Jill helps us understand what it means to live by the Spirit by examining the "fruits of the flesh" and then looking at the first three fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, and peace. This is the eighth message in Stuart and Jill's 10-message Bible study series on the Holy Spirit.

God sends His Spirit into our hearts so we can begin to walk in "newness of life." This means that when we become believers we can be free, regenerated, and renewed. The "newness" that comes from the Spirit happens in many ways. In this message, Stuart discusses the ways the Holy Spirit works within us. This is the seventh message in Stuart and Jill's 10-message Bible study series on the Holy Spirit.

Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
