While here on earth, Jesus himself sought communion with God through prayer. His disciples were to do likewise. He gave us a pattern to follow. For those who ask, seek, and knock, God is more than willing to answer. He is even more willing than friends or an earthly father, as Jesus explains through the parables. But the Christian's prayer requests need to be in line with Jesus' model prayer.

"Mary...sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said." One of the things that matters most to Jesus is our personal relationship with Him. He offers an incredible invitation. He says, "Let's talk." What does this mean? It involves listening to His Word and responding in prayer.

The attitude of Jesus in the midst of trouble was quite remarkable. He knew that He would rise again and return to the Father's presence. The disciples had no such understanding. But they learned. So should we.

Sometimes we try to understand how anything good can possibly come out of the bad things that happen to us. The disciples certainly felt like this when Jesus told them it was to their advantage that He would leave them via the Cross.

Jesus talked straight to His disciples. Not only did He tell them He was leaving them, but He also said that life would be very difficult. But they were not to roll over and play dead; they were to be witnesses in a hostile environment.

We have noted so far that human beings are made to function on the basis of trust and love. Deficiences in either area lead to deficiences in life. Now we note that we are created for relationship to the Lord and to each other. The depth of relationship we enjoy determines the quality of life we experience.
June 1, 2012
It is a well known fact that human beings have a great need to experience and express love. Failure in either of these areas can lead to profound problems. Jesus taught His troubled disciples about the comfort that comes from loving and being loved.
