The Idiocy of Idolatry! Part 1

November 28, 2012
In Isaiah 43, God assures His people that He has not cast them away. Israel turned away from the Lord, and at times even worshipped other man-made idols! Nevertheless, God honored His promises to them, and He has protected them and guided them starting in Genesis and continuing through to present day.

We serve a just God. Yes, He loves us and nurtures us, but when we drift away and stop following Him, we suffer from depression, anxiety, stress, and any number of unsettling emotions. God’s desire is for us to be at peace. In order to have this peace, we need to turn back to Him. Thankfully, He is longsuffering, and He promises forgiveness to those who seek it from Him.

As we heard last time, God knows that we are quick to become disheartened. He loves to pour blessings and comfort into us so that we can become encouraged and in turn, bless others. In His wisdom, God has created this perfect process whereby we can all be fortified and refreshed in the Spirit.

God uses prophecy for many things, but perhaps the greatest reason is that He wants us to believe in Him. Sadly, we are often quick to doubt the Lord; He knows this, and has given us these constant reminders of His omniscience. Scripture is filled with countless incidents of God’s fulfilled prophecies — in fact, many are still being fulfilled today, just as He said they would be! Thank God for knowing that we are weak, and for giving us these great reminders of His power.

Sacrifice brings us closer to the Lord. When we give of ourselves, God blesses us. In today’s study, Pastor Jeff warns us not to procrastinate. God wants us to take advantage of His blessings, but first we must delay our own desires and offer Him a sacrifice of praise.

In Leviticus 22:29-30, we find the offering of thanksgiving. God encourages His people to feast on this offering, asking only praise in return. Pastor Jeff tells us that God doesn’t need the praise, but He knows that our flesh fights against being thankful, and so He seeks to instill in us an attitude of gratitude.

Throughout Isaiah 41, we see God from a different angle. He is not just a Judge — our God can also fulfill our every need. He is a Healer, a Comforter, a Leader, a Provider, and so much more. God promises to care for His people, giving them everything they need.

The Christian’s life is not easy. In fact, we often experience struggles so difficult that we begin to doubt. In 1 Peter 4:12, Peter says, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.” God allows us to suffer so that we might grow and change for His glory. Don’t lose heart, because God always has a purpose, even when we’re going through it.

As we get into Isaiah 41, we see God as the ultimate Judge. He reigns over every part of the earth, and He always rules in favor of those who love Him. Revelation 22:13 says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” We have comfort knowing that our Lord is in control of every aspect of the world, and He has been since the beginning of time.

How great is your God? In Isaiah we see that many trusted in idols made by man. These idols were worthless. In the same way, we often trust in material riches or man’s strength. Remember that we serve a God without limitations. No matter how hard your situation is, God is bigger!

In the Old Testament, we see that when David was a shepherd, he risked his life to fight predators that would harm his flock. He even fought lions and bears with his bare hands! Here, Isaiah compares Jesus Christ to a gentle shepherd. There is nothing He will not do in order to protect us and keep us close to Him.
