Hope for the Righteous! Part 2

January 9, 2013
As Christians, the church is a place for rejuvenation and reaching out. We go to be refreshed in the Spirit, and strengthened in our walk with God. It’s also a place for evangelism. How many times have you invited someone to church or to a Bible study? We aren’t always perfect witnesses, but when we bring someone into the fellowship of the believers, we can see God do His perfect work.

Unlike anything else, the Bible relates to us just as well now as it did for those hundreds and even thousands of years ago. As believers, we have hope in the Scriptures. We see God’s prophecies fulfilled thousands of years ago, and also still being fulfilled today. Additionally, despite the crazy world we live in, God’s Word gives us a glimpse of the true peace we will experience in heaven.

Sometimes we think we’re yielded to God’s will, but in fact we’re just stubbornly following our own inclinations. The Lord says that “His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts.” Our best-laid plans are nothing compared to what God has in mind. We should take comfort in the fact that no matter how good our ideas are, God always has something better for us.

Salvation is free, and God only asks that we give our lives over to Him. Are you willing to give Him everything? Or will you insist on going your own way? In today’s study, Pastor Jeff reminds us that Christ is the “fount of living waters.” We can only be satisfied when we drink from Him, and when we are hungry, we should feast on the Word of God.

As we start our study in Isaiah 55, Pastor Jeff asks the pivotal question: “Do you thirst?” God has placed within man the innate desire for God. Our souls constantly long for satisfaction, and all the money or material possessions we might have will never satisfy. When we turn to God, He promises that He will satisfy our thirst for Him, and He will give us true “rest for our souls.” We will never again have to strive to fill that void.

When was the last time you received true, lasting peace from the world? As soon as something goes wrong, we panic. But when we’re in close fellowship with the Lord, we have peace no matter what our circumstances are. Despite trials and tribulations, we are confident in God’s promises to protect us and keep us from all lasting harm.

Sometimes when we’re hurting or feel empty, we withdraw from the Lord. We turn inward and try to find some kind of comfort within ourselves because we feel too weak to reach out. However, Pastor Jeff tells us instead that we need to turn outward and seek help from the Lord. In giving praise to Him, He will show Himself strong to us, and revive and refresh our spirits.

Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities...and with his stripes we are healed.” As we learned last week, there was no other way for our sins to be absolved. Christ’s death was mandatory in order for us to receive salvation. On our own, we could only find suffering and eternal destruction, but through the sacrifice of the lamb we have eternal life.
