How to Handle a Promotion, Part 2

November 6, 2023

Adversity is an excellent test of character. Prosperity is an even better test. Maintaining a posture of humility, compassion, and gentleness when everything seems to go your way isn’t a given.

After hard work on Jerusalem’s wall, Nehemiah received a promotion to serve as governor of Judah. Rather than being distracted by the new privileges, projects, and people, Nehemiah kept his focus on serving God.

Grow in integrity today as Pastor Chuck Swindoll preaches on Nehemiah 5:14–19. Be someone who sticks to the path of godliness when your promotion comes.

Money is a necessary currency for goods and services in today’s world. Overflow or lack can become dangerous ditches alongside a God-honoring path. When Israel returned to Jerusalem from exile, the people faced poverty. Some grew so desperate that that they sold their own children into slavery to make ends meet. When Nehemiah realized the scope of this tragedy in Nehemiah 5:1–13, he grew angry that the Israelites were turning away from God, their divine Helper. Gain financial wisdom from Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he shares godly stewardship advice based upon Nehemiah’s example.

As Nehemiah and the Israelites constructed Jerusalem’s wall, obstacles seemed to grow around them. Nehemiah 4:9–23 reveals that the most prominent among these problems was the disease of discouragement, which spread throughout the workforce like a plague. Discouragement was an invisible force that inflicted the people with a loss of strength, loss of vision, loss of confidence, and a loss of security. We all face discouragement, but it doesn’t have to take us down! Find your second wind with Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he explains how God’s people reunited, focused on God, and tackled their task head-on.

It’s no surprise that people often step down from positions of leadership. Leadership is costly. It demands physical and emotional energy, time, and resources. Many placed in the same difficult position as Nehemiah would have quit. He faced ever-increasing opposition in his mission to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall. Yet Nehemiah 4:1–9 shows that Israel’s leader didn’t back down, and the wall kept going up. How did he do it? Nehemiah pressed into prayer. Listen to these prayers with Pastor Chuck Swindoll, and remember that, when God is in a project, it can’t fail!

As Nehemiah transitioned from royal attendant to city builder, God placed the important mantle of leadership upon his shoulders . . . for good reason! Nehemiah practiced disciplines of strong leadership: spending time in solitude and prayer, objectively appraising his circumstances, unifying those under his charge, and setting in place an appropriate plan of action. Perhaps most impressive, he handled criticism and opposition—the most difficult parts of leadership—with abundant grace. Help cultivate this skill essential leadership skill through Pastor Chuck Swindoll’s exposition of Nehemiah 2:11–20.
