Real Friends, Part 4B

Making Sure You’re Making a Difference

If we were to survey your five closest friends, what would they say about you? Perhaps they’d commend your loyalty. Or point out your keen sense of humor. Or talk about your generosity. All those are worthwhile qualities in a friend. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez challenges us to minister to our friends in order to hear the reply, “She, or he, made an eternal impact in my life!”

Making Sure You’re Making a DifferenceInvite your friends over for dinner, and you can expect to share some good food, funny stories, and maybe a laugh or two. Being with close friends usually guarantees a good time. But could it be that God has placed those people in your life for an even greater and more strategic purpose? On this edition of Focal Point, bible teacher Mike Fabarez describes God’s deeper plan for real friendships.

Protecting Our Friendships with Agape LoveRelationships can be fragile. Sometimes all it takes is a harsh word, a hurtful action, or a thoughtless snub to burn a bridge that may never be repaired. So how can we keep our treasured friendships from unintentionally going down in flames? On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez continues his mini-series in Colossians called Real Friends, with practical ways to ensure our relationships with other Christians stand the test of time.

Protecting Our Friendships with Agape Love We know how to love our spouse. And we probably understand how to love our kids or our extended family. But what about the friend we see on Sunday morning? How should we love our brothers and sisters in the church? Mike Fabarez will tackle that question, on this edition of Focal Point. Just like any other relationship, our friendships require care and concern.

Practicing Wholehearted ForgivenessYou know, even our most trusted and cherished friends can let us down. Hurt us. Disappoint us. And it’s often the wounds of a Christian brother or sister that leave the biggest scar. So how do we maintain strong and healthy friendships with imperfect people? On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez looks for that answer in the words of Colossians, Chapter 3. It’s here that we’ll find a biblical quality that can keep our relationships intact and our friendships growing.

Practicing Wholehearted ForgivenessHurt me once, okay, I’ll forgive you.  Hurt me twice, fine, I’ll forgive one more time.  But sin against me after that, and I’m tempted to walk away, throw up my hands and say, “This friendship is over!”  Hi, I’m Dave Drui.  On this edition Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that to maintain lasting friendships with imperfect people, we’ll have to employ God’s kind of grace, which is continually unrestricted and unrestrained.

Cultivating Genuine KindnessImagine if your church wasn’t filled with Sunday morning strangers, but with warm and compassionate friends!  It wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to think that close-knit friendships would radically change everything about our congregations!  It’s that vision for the Body of believers that Mike Fabarez has in mind on this edition of Focal Point.  And we’ll turn to God’s Word for guidance on how to build up our churches by strengthening our relationships.

Cultivating Genuine Kindness Ever wondered why Jesus chose to hang out with the disciples?  It would have been easier for Jesus to accomplish His mission alone.  Yet, He took the time walk alongside a group of bumbling fisherman who needed a lot of love.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez challenges us to follow Jesus’ example.  As Christians, we’re not designed to live in isolation.  Instead, we’re invited to link arms and walk through life together!

Attacking Prideful PretenseWe live in a culture of comparison, don’t we? We’re calculating who has the better job, the nicer kids, the bigger house. This attitude can even infect the church, and have us competing for who is the better Christian! And in an effort to look good we may be tempted to stretch the truth about ourselves. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez challenges us to resist those untruthful presentations or negative comparisons. Instead, Colossians 3 instructs us to live in open honesty with other Christians.

Attacking Prideful PretenseSitting next to that picture-perfect guy or gal in church, we become embarrassingly aware of our own flaws and imperfections. Our tendency then is to paste on a smile, hide our mistakes and pretend that we have it all together. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes the church as a perfect place for imperfect people! And God is calling us to take off the masks and live in authentic honesty with one another.

Fighting Sinful AngerThe natural way of dealing with feelings of anger is either to get loud, get cold, or get even! When anger grabs a hold of us, we’re prone to hurt those who’ve hurt us. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that Jesus demonstrated a radical new way of handling such hostile feelings. And by following the biblical model we find in passages like Colossians, Chapter 3 that we can calm an angry heart.
