A Closer Relationship with God Part 4a

May 20, 2011
Many of us have role models... people that we respect and look up to. Perhaps it’s your pastor, your parent, or friend at work. But have you ever thought of yourself as a role model? Probably not, if you’re like most. Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez says we can be our own role model, and that can be a good motivation for future growth.

Aren’t you blown away as you see how sin is treated so casually, and even applauded in our world today? In just flipping through the channels on TV, we see evidence of that to a high degree don’t we! Today on Focal Point, we turn our attention to Hebrews 10. These are sobering words we’re about to look at which really should prompt us to examine ourselves to see if we’re in the faith. As we go through our study today, we’d encourage you to do just that, and see why we should care about the sin in our lives.

Within our circles of friendship and in the local church, you can probably think of someone right now that claims to be a Christian, but they really don’t take sin seriously. In fact, they deliberately and continually sin, and show no remorse or repentance. What are we to make of this? Mike Fabarez will encourage us to consider our own relationship with sin, and by the end of our time together, we’ll have an answer to that question I just posed. Join us if you can for an important study today as we insure that our lives are transformed and on the grow.

Today we come back to our series, “A Closer Relationship with God.” As the series title would suggest, the purpose behind this study is to help us grow, and move forward to a more godly life. For this to happen, pastor Mike Fabarez says it starts with having some challenging friendships. Maybe you’ve run across one of the many TV shows that feature some screaming physical trainers, helping people lose weight through diet and exercise? We need some people to prod and push us in the right direction spiritually speaking, and be willing to do that for someone else too.

As believers in Christ, we should all desire a closer relationship with the Lord, and to grow spiritually. Sadly many of us can look back over the years and see that there’s been little to no growth, or maybe we’ve even gone backwards. Today on Focal Point, we return to a helpful five part series from Hebrews ten designed to spur us on to love and good deeds. We’ve given the study the title, “A Closer Relationship with God,” and by the end of it, we hope that’s just what you’ll have as you put these principles to practice.

If you’re a Christian you should want a better and closer relationship with God. We really never arrive at perfection this side of heaven, and so throughout life it’s to be our aim to keep growing spiritually. But how do we get closer to the Lord? That’s the question of the day. Our current series on Focal Point is helping us arrive at an answer. Here in part two of “A Closer Relationship to God,” Pastor Mike Fabarez offers six things that if applied to our lives, we’ll be growing just as we should be.

Before we can have a closer relationship to God, we’ve got to make sure we have a relationship to start with! Today’s program will help us determine where we’re at spiritually. Turn to Hebrews ten, verse nineteen, as Pastor Mike points the way to a "Closer Relationship with God."

"I have a new word for you from the Lord!" How often have we heard that line? As we’ll see in a moment, God actually told us we can expect this to happen in the last days. But do we need a new revelation or a new version of Christ? Keep that question in mind and join us for Focal Point as our series, “Christ Changed Everything,” concludes.

Every once in a while we’ll have someone knock on our door and offer us some reading material. At first glance it may appear to compliment the Gospel as we know it, but open it up, and it attacks the message of grace. Maybe they’re offering a “newer” testament than what we have in our Bibles, or perhaps another testament altogether! Today’s broadcast is really going to help us understand why we shouldn’t be looking for a newer, better, or different testament than what we have in the Word. And in this age where the message of grace is being attacked in great measure, this is a very timely study.

Have you noticed that God is big on pictures, parables or illustrations? One example of that, among many, would be all of those animal sacrifices we find in Old Testament times. It was a picture of Christ who would later come to give His own blood, and solve our sin problem through substitution. Let’s see together how we should respond to this as we join Mike Fabarez in Hebrews on Focal Point.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “No man is poor who has had a godly mother.” Charles Spurgeon was heard to say, “I cannot tell how much I owe to the prayers of my good mother.” Today we have some encouragement to share with mothers from the Scriptures. Not only will Mike Fabarez express God’s wisdom for mothers, but we’ll see how we should love them too.
