Building Up or Tearing Down
Sunday, November 08, 2009
When you want your kids to learn something, what do you do? Probably repeat it over and over again, hoping that eventually it will sink in. When you come to a passage like Romans 14 that seems repetitious, don't roll your eyes and walk away like your teenager might. Instead, let's look together at why these themes are worth mentioning twice.

Responsible Christianity
We live in a how-to society. We all want the quickest results from the easiest efforts. Christians are no exception. What we want is a list of dos and don'ts - a set of rules to follow that will ensure in the Christian life. Even in Bible study many Christians skip over historical detail and careful interpretation. God is never in a hurry. He knows that successful spiritual growth is not an instant process. He is not a God of formulas and how-tos. Real growth comes from responsible living over a lifetime.

Life By the Son
by Donald Barnhouse
In this work, Donald Barnhouse leads us through the assurance and foundation of our holiness. He insightfully says "If the Word of God contained your name, you would always have the fear that the message was addressed to someone else of the same name." He reminds us that "the work of salvation has been done in our hearts and that it has been done forever."
We see that only in Christ are we counted as righteous. Our assurance comes from the work of Christ and not from our own efforts. All of this leads to our cleansing, "for cleansing of the believer from his daily sins of omission and commission is the gateway to the maintenance of an unbroken fellowship with God which will enable us to have less sins to confess to God, and more periods of unbroken fellowship and victory in Christ."
