Dr. J. Vernon McGee

The Potter and the Clay

(Jeremiah 18:1-6) When God spoke through His prophets, He had them use real life experiences or even act out their messages. Hosea was told to marry a prostitute, Ezekiel dug through a wall in his house, and Joel used a locust storm to make his point. And in Jeremiah’s prophecy we find one of the most familiar prophetic illustrations of all.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

(Jeremiah 17:12) Among the noise and activity of life in a busy world, it can be difficult to find a quiet spot away from the telephones, televisions, cars, sirens, and many other distractions. But believers can find a sanctuary of the soul.

If you had to choose a man to give a harsh message to an unresponsive and hostile audience, would you pick someone with tender emotions who would likely cry about the message he had to deliver? That's the kind of man God chose to bring a tough message to His people.

(2 Thessalonians 2:7) Over 40 years ago, Dr. McGee said that “lawlessness is growing and will finally break out until it actually is world revolution.” Lawlessness began with the fall of man in Genesis chapter 3, and according to Scripture it will culminate in the person of the Antichrist during the Great Tribulation.

(2 Thessalonians 2) John tells us that during the history of the church, many antichrists will arise. They deny the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ and gather around them a great number of followers. During the Tribulation, the final Antichrist who will deceive the whole world will also have a church.

(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 2 Corinthians 5:1-8) God is following a plan. This truth is revealed in the numerous prophecies recorded in the Scriptures. Most have already been fulfilled, but there are still many waiting for the day of their fulfillment, particularly those dealing with the Second Coming of Christ.

Paul’s persecution of Christians continued until he met Christ on the road to Damascus and found out that the Messiah of the Old Testament was actually the Lord Jesus. From that time on, Paul preached the gospel everywhere he went.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
