Dr. J. Vernon McGee

A lesson in the storm

March 28, 2024

“Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, my way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?” God knows about the difficulties and problems of those that are His own. And friend, if you belong to Him, He’s able to quiet the storms of life for you. And somebody says, “Well, I’m in a storm and He hasn’t quieted it.” Well, then, instead of sitting down and weeping or beginning to criticize God, why not begin to look around and find out what the lesson is He wants you to learn in the storm. God would not let you go through it unless there was a lesson there for you to learn.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up to the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God.” And the “good tidings,” of course, is the gospel. What is it? “Behold your God.” And my friend, until you see that Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh, you haven’t seen anything yet. Immanuel, God with us. And because of that, His name’s Jesus. That’s His human name. And if He’s just a human, He’s not my Savior—but since He’s Immanuel, He is Jesus. He is my Savior.

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.” Now we come here to where man is compared to the grass of the field. And the question is: Where can there be comfort in this? “This is not comfort,” you say. Yes, it is. You see, man is faint and frail and feeble, but the Word of God is what’s strong and sure and secure. And that’s our hiding place. That’s our foundation that we rest on. That’s our sword and our buckler. That’s our high tower. That’s our protection. That’s our security. That’s our salvation.

The heathen, in all their religions, they bring an offering to God to appease Him, and that’s what propitiation means. You’ve got to do something to win Him over. But the thing is that the sin of man has alienated man from God, but you see it’s God who did something. And today God is propitious. You don’t have to do anything to win Him over. And propitiation is toward God and reconciliation is toward us. God has done everything that needs to be done. And today, we’re asked to be reconciled to God; not to bring something to win Him over. God’s already won over. That’s what Jesus did for us on the cross.

The Lord Jesus put it like this in John 16:23-24: “And in that day (and that’s this day) ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father, in my name, he will give it to you. Hitherto have you asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive and your joy may be full.” Now, we can go to God in the name of Christ today—to our Heavenly Father with our prayer. And if it’s His will, if it pleases the Lord Jesus, if it’s in His name, “Thy will be done.” It means that it’s to please Him.

Now today moral values are gone. That’s our problem, actually, today in this country. For years there’s been taught in our schools the evolutionary theory, which makes man an animal. And no moral values are taught. Now if you talk today as I do about law and order and about a high state of morality, somehow or another you’re not as smart and, therefore, we should not listen to that which is old-time stuff. Well, may I say to you that the old-time stuff is going to be the future stuff. And that will be a King reigning in righteousness. And then moral values will come back into place.

“A man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” Now He’s not only King, you see. He’s a Savior King. He bore the winds and the tempest of the judgment of sin for us. And He’s a Rock for our protection today. And He was set before us, you remember, back in Isaiah 26:4 as the Rock of Ages. And this is another aspect of His ministry under the figure of the Rock. He is a place of hiding today.

Back of the thrones of this world today stands God, keeping watch over His own. And His purpose is being fulfilled in this world today. As I’ve been studying Isaiah, I am convinced of this. As you see God penetrating into the life of these pagan, heathen nations that God does overrule nations. And He proves it. Because God wrote down before it happened, He says, “This will happen to this nation and that will happen to that nation.” And it’s all come to pass. Maybe some of us that are discouraged today, maybe we need to get into the presence of God and make the discovery that He’s still on the throne.

If you have sin in your life that you’ve not dealt with; if you’re harboring this morning bitterness and hatred and wrong feelings toward someone else, the Holy Spirit cannot manifest Himself in His fullness through your life. And there are multitudes right here in my presence today and listening in that have that kind of an attitude today. And because of that, you hinder the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Because you can do that. That is the only way as I see it the Holy Spirit can be limited and withdrawn today. Because each believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and he will continue to be indwelt, and he’s sealed with the Holy Spirit, until the day of redemption.

Woe to you and me today when we turn away from God and expect to turn to some little materialistic or human help. Don’t misunderstand; God expects you to be reasonable. But in the final analysis, what does have top priority as far as help is concerned? Where do you go to for help? To your banker? Even to your preacher? Or to this radio teacher here? Where do you go for help? Don’t go to us. Friends, I don’t know what to do in many of the problems that arise in my own life. Now it’s nice to ask for advice, but in the final analysis, we go to God for help.

Now don’t hurry. Don’t say, “Oh, we are at the end of the age.” Who told you that? God says, “You let Me work this out because I have not given you any dates.” Isaiah will tell us, “They that wait on the Lord will renew their strength ….” All of this tension and pressure today, trying to rush God. Friends, He’s in no hurry. And maybe things over there are not like you think they ought to be, and you and I’d like to rearrange it. You let the Lord work it out. He’s got eternity ahead of Him and, apparently, He doesn’t seem to be in a hurry. And when you and I get in step with Him, it’s going to make life lots easier for us down here.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
