Stuart and Jill Briscoe

The Normal Christian Life

May 8, 2019

Have you ever wondered what a normal Christian life looks like—what the core aspects of a faith walk are, or why your faith walk looks different from someone else’s?

In this message, Pete Briscoe seeks to answer these questions by outlining a passage of Scripture that he believes to be the secret to understanding the Bible and the Christian life. He shows us what it looks like to dance with the Spirit instead of marching to a set of rules.

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story!  Jill Briscoe teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

From birth, we embark on a lifetime of learning and we learn in a variety of ways. If we assume that we were created by an intentional God who had something in mind when He created us, then clearly we need to learn much about Him and His purposes. Peter said this would “keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:8).

Thankfulness finds its resting place at the feet of Jesus—our comforter, our protector, and our healer. This message is a reminder that Jesus was and always will be in the business of healing people in all areas of life. And even when he hasn’t healed as we hope, we can still trust Him in His sovereignty.

An educated man is one who has learned how to learn and never stops learning. But it’s important to note that spiritual wisdom differs from earthly wisdom because spiritual wisdom comes from the Spirit of Christ—from heaven.

Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
