Telling the Truth

Stuart and Jill Briscoe

How to Deal with Adversity, Part 1

June 18, 2018

Romans 8:28 tells us that God works all things for the good to those who love Him.  But this promise is hard to believe when we suffer through difficult circumstances.  And if we’re honest, it seems like there’s no way God is working in all things, because much of what happens to us is totally contrary to all that God is and all that God stands for.

So where does this leave us?

In this message, Stuart Briscoe unpacks Romans 8:28 to help us come to terms with our feelings of doubt and have complete faith and hope that God really is at work in our lives.

We have an insatiable desire to control and manipulate what happens around us—all in pursuit of achieving happiness.  But the truth is we have very little control of what’s happening around us and hence little chance of finding the happiness that eludes us. As believers in Jesus, should the pursuit of happiness really be our end goal?  Do we need God to fix our happenings, or do we need God to fix our attitudes? In this message, Stuart Briscoe teaches from Nehemiah where we learn where to find stability, security, and well-being—and discover where God wants us to focus our minds so we can rejoice and be glad even in uncertain days.

No one likes being told what to think. So we shouldn’t be surprised when quarrels erupt over issues like environmentalism, immigration, or health care reform. It’s easy to find yourself in a heated discussion that only leads to strained and broken relationships. In Matthew 10:16—we’re told to be “shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” as we interact with the world. But what does that look like in practical terms? In this message, Pete presents a model for thinking through issues like these so you can decide what decisions to make—or what positions to take—concerning todays hot topics.

We live in a world where moral and immoral ideas, life-giving and life-ending ideas, and liberty-affirming and rights-restricting ideas are all thought to have merit and be worthy of consideration. As a result, claiming that Jesus is the remedy for every hurt, transgression, broken situation, and societal ill is likely be met with a sneer. But we can’t let sneers, name-calling, or fear stop us from sharing the incredible gift of Jesus. Paul never did. He was bold, even in the face of resistance and crowds of hecklers. In this message, Pete Briscoe digs into Acts 17 to show us what motivated Paul to time and time again proclaim Jesus, even in the most pagan-loving city of all, Athens. It’s a message for us now as we struggle to tell a resistant world about Jesus.

What do you think about gay marriage? Do you believe Muslims are peaceful or violent people? Do you think abortion is a woman’s right?  What strategy will you use to answer tough questions like these? Will you provide a politically correct answer, a faith-based answer, or shrug off the questions and not answer at all?  You need a strategy if you’re going to engage on the tough issues. In this message, Pete Briscoe suggests we think twice about sharing our opinion and instead stick with what we know is most important—and will ultimately change people’s lives.

Gun control, human rights, police brutality, government corruption—these are perplexing and difficult issues to discuss. What’s happening in our country and how are we as Christians supposed to react? Especially when our faith response can often place us in situations where arguments easily flare and lead to even further disparity.  In this message, Pete Briscoe explores how we risk losing our voice to speak into important issues if we fail to convey our position with tender boldness.

Life is full of squalls—sudden unannounced and unexpected storms that can lead us to question if God is in control of our lives. Death, sickness, unemployment, broken relationships, fears and failures are some of the troubles Satan uses to swamp us with doubt, usually when we’re already stressed and exhausted.  How do you respond when you’re hit with the squalls of life? Are you like the disciples in Mark 4 who wondered why Jesus slept while their boat was sinking, or do you believe God is in as much control when He’s seemingly asleep as when He’s obviously awake? Do you pray, “Don’t let there be another squall”? Or do you see storms as part of God’s plan for your life?  Teaching from the Gospel of Mark, Jill Briscoe addresses the issues of suffering and faith, challenging us to examine our beliefs in God in the midst of trouble.
