Jehovah Nissi - The Lord My Banner

April 19, 2024

A bad temper, a constant desire to overindulge on brownies, or a tendency to not trust God are all examples of battles we can face from time to time. This battle of the flesh will always exist, but it's God's battle not ours. In this message, Jill explains how we can know God as our Jehovah Nissi, or our banner, so that we can rely on Him to win our battles.

Bitterness, anger, disappointment, and sadness are all feelings that can cause us to have a bad attitude, and we can feel stuck in that frame of mind. But when we let Him, God can heal our soul, spirit, and body. In this message, Jill talks about God as our Jehovah Rophe, or healer, and lets us know what amazing things can happen when we let God heal our attitude.

In Genesis, God asked Abraham to go to Mount Moriah to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Abraham obeyed God and took Isaac up the mountain. On the way, Isaac kept asking his father what they would be sacrificing. When it became clear what was happening, Isaac obeyed his father—even though he was probably very frightened. Are you like Isaac, willing to be a sacrifice for God? In this message, Jill helps us understand God as our Jehovah-Jireh, our provider, so we can learn to be committed to God's plan.

In Bible times, every seven years all slaves had the chance to go free. If they chose to stay with their masters, they would be taken to the public market and a peg was put through one of the slave's ears to mutilate the ear. That way he would be "marked" as a slave who loved his master and did not want to go free. We are called to serve God as willing slaves. Do you consider yourself "marked" for God? In this message, Jill explores God as our Adonai, or master, to help us understand how we can serve God better.

The wonder of God's creation is all around us. Look at the flowers, the birds, and the tiniest insects, and you'll discover the amazing plan and intricate design of His creations. And then think about how much more he cares for us and his entire universe.

We learn in Scripture how God wrestled Jacob to the ground one night and turned him upside down—so he could live right-side up. Jacob became a “prince” with God instead of a pain. When we’re suffering the consequences of our own poor choices; when we’re bearing the brunt of someone’s vengeance and anger; when we feel absolutely on our own and life is not working out as planned, that’s when God will turn up. He wants to walk down the stairway of heaven right into our hearts to make us aware of His personal interest and concern.

Is your heart asking, “How long, O Lord”? Who or what are you waiting for? A job? A friend to be a friend? Someone to love you or for you to love back? Are you waiting for a break—or a baby? A child to say they’re sorry, reconciliation, or...?

I believe in Jesus, but for so long I’ve been spiritually dry. I made a mistake. A bad mistake! And since then, I’ve been living in a desert of regrets in a dry and barren land… thirsty, thirsty, thirsty.

We often ask, “Where is God? I look for Him, but I do not see Him. I listen for Him, but I do not hear Him. It is dark—so very dark. Not pitch black perhaps, but my life is lived in shadows. How can I find God in the shadows?”

In Psalm 71,  we have a man in his middle years looking back, looking around, and looking forward. He is musing over some of his life lessons of faith and wisdom, seeking to finish strong. This is a good exercise for all of us… whatever age we are!

In 2 Kings 4, there’s a story about a widow who has run out of options on how to pay her creditors. She’s facing the real possibility that she will lose both of her young sons to slavery, as a means of paying her debt. This desperate woman is out of money, out of hope, and out of faith. She’s angry at God for the situation she’s facing with seemingly no way out. Have you ever felt that way? How do you find peace when your faith is completely out of focus? When the sheer weight of the moment has blinded you to the Holy Spirit at work on your behalf? Jill Briscoe’s message, A Little Pot of Oil, will remind you that God is sufficient. And you have all you need when you have all of Him in all you. This teaching is also available in Jill’s book A Little Pot of Oil.
