Your Need for Friendship

December 1, 2017

You probably don’t need to be convinced about how important it is to share life with others. To be friendless in a friendless world is a frightening thing. But have you ever struggled to develop meaningful and precious friendships?

In this message, Jill Briscoe teaches about being vulnerable in our relationships and how friendship can deeply impact our lives.

As someone who is made in the image of God, you have a better understanding than you might think about His longing desire for companionship and friendship. Are You a Friend of God? explores Scripture that reveals God’s friendships with His people. Enoch was God’s walking and talking friend, Job was His hurting friend, and Moses was His waiting friend. What kind of friend are you? In this message Jill Briscoe will shift how you think about your relationship with God and challenge you to identify, and grow in yourself, the characteristics that God is looking for in a friend.

Do you believe that some sin is too big for God to forgive? Do you wonder if someone who has sinned can be restored and renewed? Can God use them again? Can God use you again?  Be comforted. There is “life after sin,” as Jill Briscoe shows us by exploring the life of David. In Psalm 51, David writes about turning around and running into the arms of the loving, merciful, compassionate God who was waiting for him, waiting to take him back. Do you need to turn and run in to the arms of God? He’s waiting for you, too.

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop.  Have you experienced a time when you’ve failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David’s life story is not only that it shows man’s great sin, but that it shows God’s even greater forgiveness and grace.

There is a battle going on around us. Do you realize that? We are fighting a battle against the foes of the Lord. Maybe you’ve felt this battle in the giants you’re facing in life, the problems that bog you down. Here’s the good news: God calls, equips, and empowers His servants for the good fight of faith against the giants of this world.  David’s story is a perfect illustration of God calling His people to face different giants throughout life. In this message, Jill Briscoe shows us how God equipped David with everything he needed to be victorious in each battle. If we allow Him to work through us, God will equip us, too.

Those of us who played organized sports in school may remember a time when the race or game was not going well, and we just wanted to give up. For many of us, it was the shouts from the sidelines that kept us going. We could hear the coach shouting, “Keep going—you can do it!”  In the same way the coach keeps the team going, Christ keeps us going and guides us home. We just have to learn to turn everything in our lives over to Him. In this message, Jill explains how we can learn to let God “coach” us and find contentment in every circumstance.

What people come to mind when thinking of those who have a servant attitude? Missionaries? Pastors? Yourself? Do you think that having a humble attitude is important? The apostle Paul had a servant heart and attitude. He continually gave himself away to benefit those around him. As a result, he was able to bring many people to Christ.  We can impact those around us just as Paul did if we learn the spiritual art of humility. In this message, Jill explains how having a self-sacrificing attitude can impact others.

What do you do when you are suffering through a hard time? Many of us sulk, complain, and feel sorry for ourselves. Others put on a strong face, but when they are alone, the fear and sadness take over, and they break down. Much of the apostle Paul’s life was spent suffering—most of the time in jail. But unlike many of us, Paul was joyful no matter what his circumstance.  This “spiritual art” of contentment was something Paul learned—and it wasn’t easy. In this message, Jill uses Paul’s life as an example of how we can learn contentment, joy, and peace of mind no matter what we are going through.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” After Jesus’ ascension into heaven, the believers were filled with fear, wondering if they would be next to be crucified. But something happened that energized these people, gave them power to speak and do things as they never could have before!

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” It’s no secret that all of us will die in the end. Even Jesus died! And this makes His resurrection one of the most important aspects of His life and a source of incredible hope for us.

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
