Teach Us to Listen

November 2, 2017

One of the things that matters most to Jesus is our personal relationship with Him. This matters to Him even when it doesn’t matter to us! He offers the human race an incredible invitation. He says, “Let's talk.” What does this mean? It involves listening to His Word and responding in prayer.

When we are bogged down with feelings of inadequacy, or when we are burdened by expectations, it’s a great time to pray. But sometimes it can be hard for us to know what to pray or even how to pray. In this message, Jill walks us through the Old Testament prayer process that was followed within the temple and compares it to New Testament times to help us understand the importance of prayer and learn how to deepen our prayer life.

Think for a moment about the how you spend the majority of your day—working, attending school, raising children, running errands... Now, how do you spend the time that remains? Have you set aside time for the Lord each day? In this message, Jill encourages us to be intentional in connecting with God in all that we do and to make each moment count for Him.

We have to make a lot of choices every day... financial decisions, relational decisions, parenting decisions. From making a very small decision to dealing with what seems like an impossible situation, we often find ourselves looking for wisdom and striving to follow God’s will. We’re seeking to make wise choices. In this message, Jill looks at the life of Solomon to help us understand how we can develop wisdom.

Have you tried to carry all of your groceries into the house in one trip so you didn’t have to go back out to the car? Your arms are aching, the bags are pinching your fingers, and the food is beginning to slide out. But you keep moving, hoping to get everything into the kitchen before the bags break! Now imagine that someone in your family came out as you were unloading your bags and offered to carry them so you could sit down to rest. You probably wouldn’t turn them down! Well, Jesus has made this offer—He wants to carry our burdens. We just need to say yes. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says:  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story! Jill teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

Can you say with certainty that you believe God is working out His greater purposes for you? Do you believe He can bring beauty out of the most hideous situations?  Job’s story demonstrates the undeniable beauty that God can bring out of darkness. In this message, Jill shares how, as a result of our troubles, we can experience beauty like never before.

Are you ever tempted to blame yourself for your suffering? Satan wants us to believe that hardships are punishment for our sin—but nothing could be further from the truth. Christ suffered the consequences of our sin so we don’t have to. In this message, Jill looks to the book of Job to explain how—in the midst of our turmoil—we can live above Satan’s lies and live in light of the Truth instead.

Words can sting. We’ve all, at some point, experienced the pain that comes from harsh criticism. So what do you do when you've been deeply hurt by the words of a stranger, an authoritative figure, or—worst of all—a loved one you greatly trust?  Job experienced this, as his greatest comforters suddenly became his greatest critics. But what we see in Job’s story is how God can use criticism to teach us a valuable, life-changing lesson.

Will you stay faithful to God even when your world is crumbling around you? Suffering puts us in a vulnerable state for Satan’s attacks. He roams the earth, waiting to pounce until we’re weak and at our breaking point.  We see this all throughout the book of Job. Satan prowls about, teases him, and uses individuals in Job’s life to criticize and hurt him. In this message, Jill teaches us how we can cope with Satan’s attacks and come out of the battle victorious.

Even when your theology aligns with the Bible and you recognize that sometimes the righteous are called to suffer, when pain and suffering come your way it can feel a bit like diving into cold water—it can take your breath away and test your faith.  How do we cope while we wait for God to intervene in our painful circumstances? We can look to the story of Job to find answers.
