Understanding our Trials and Tribulations Part 1

April 22, 2021

When a severe trial strikes it’s easy to think something is wrong or that God must be mad at us!  But the truth of the matter is, every Christian will go through trials and it doesn’t diminish God’s love for us, or necessarily indicate it’s as a result of sin in our lives!  Today on Sound Doctrine we continue to receive encouragement, practical instruction and eternal perspective for those times when we suffer greatly.

Today pastor Jeff brings a special message full of hope and encouragement.  And I think you’d agree, we need plenty of that right now with all that’s been going on. These are dark days, and people are afraid.  But we can move from fear to faith, if we’ll look to Jesus and stand on His promises.  That’s the emphasis of today’s study in the Word.

Could it get any worse!  Maybe that thought has crossed your mind in the last 12 months or so.  Then it does.  And it would be easy for us to grow discouraged and give up hope.  We need hope for today, and that’s what we aim to bring you on this special edition of Sound Doctrine.

You may recall it was Jesus that said, “Occupy till I come!”  What was He driving at?  Or, how do we do that?  That’s where today’s Sound Doctrine will prove to be helpful.  Pastor Jeff Johnson is about to open First Peter chapter four, and unveil a few things we’re to be doing in the last days.

Pastor Jeff Johnson is taking us through First Peter, which has a lot to say to suffering saints.  In chapter one, verses eight and nine, we encounter four things we need to be reminded of when encountering a trial.  The first is to love God, then to trust in Him.  The third has to do with rejoicing in Him.  How is that possible when times are tough?  Let’s find out!

Recently on Sound Doctrine we’ve been receiving God’s encouragement and instruction for the difficult seasons in life through a study of First Peter.  And that continues today.  When you’re going through a rough time, that’s a good time to recall Jesus’ promise to come again!  Not only will that encourage our hearts, but will give us perspective and help us persevere.

One of the great things about being a Christian is having the confidence that God has a plan for everything that comes our way in life.  So we have every reason to trust Him. We’ll be reminded on today’s broadcast that having the right perspective makes all the difference in how we respond to adversity. It frees us to focus on going deeper in our relationship with the Lord.

Life in the year 2021 is full of disturbances! Is it possible to experience peace in a Pandemic?  It’s a real temptation to go from one thing to the next in our attempts to find relief.  But there’s a much better way to go and that is to the prince of peace - Jesus Christ.  Pastor Jeff Johnson will show us how to live life the way we’re meant to no matter what comes our way.

It’s no secret that Christians in the past faced suffering and persecution. They certainly did in Peter’s day!  The first century Roman world was hostile to christianity to put it mildly.  And we face it today in case you haven’t noticed.  We can count on the enemy coming against us.  So How should we respond?  First Peter chapter three answers that for us.

The believer is no stranger to suffering, especially in recent months.  But God never promised this life would be easy for us.  However, there’s a comforting promise you can cling to at such times, and it’s this: God’s eyes are on us, and His ears are open to our prayers.

When a trial comes into our lives, it’s common to experience a number of emotions.  From fear, to worry, or even anger.  And those emotions if we’re not careful can distort our thinking and lead us to wrong decisions.  Pastor Jeff Johnson believes there are four things we need to be reminded of, especially during trials.
