To Rome and Beyond, Part 2

October 5, 2020

Today we aim to complete our study of Acts and as you’ll see it ends in a rather unique way.  Some have referred to this book as the Unfinished Symphony.  But that’s very much intentional as the story continues right on into the present day.  The book of Acts describes the gospel moving from Jerusalem to Rome.  And we pick up the story in verse twenty as they’ve just entered Rome.

References: Acts 28:12-31

We’re nearing the end of our studies in the book of Acts. And in Acts chapter twenty-eight the apostle Paul is making his way to Rome through a storm, then shipwreck and to top it off a snake bite. Now he’s on the last leg of his journey, and he receives what must have been an unexpected yet very timely encouragement from some fellow believers who’ve traveled down from Rome to greet him.

When we go through painful experiences like we’re in now, it’s easy for us to get down and discouraged.  But we’d like to elevate your perspective today on Sound Doctrine, to see what God is up to through it all, and on the other side as well! Today pastor Jeff Johnson recalls a very difficult season in the apostle Paul’s life where he experienced great loss.  But God would bless him, the gospel would be preached, many lives changed and healed! Let’s see how God continues to bless like that, even today in a Pandemic!

In light of all that’s taken place recently, many are asking, could America be on the brink of a revival or great awakening?  We’ve certainly seen revivals in the past, and today on Sound Doctrine we’ll recall a time when God poured out his blessing following Paul’s ministry.  Pastor Jeff Johnson believes what started way back then, continues today.

When a storm strikes, like a Pandemic, we can so easily lose focus and get off track.  If you’ll recall in our recent studies of Acts on Sound Doctrine we read about the Apostle Paul’s shipwreck off the coast of Malta. We saw that, despite the challenges, Paul didn’t let his circumstances derail him from his true focus, sharing the love of Christ!  And what great encouragement that is to us to take advantage of the opportunities we have even today.

Today we open the twenty-eighth and final chapter of Acts.  Paul finds himself now shipwrecked and on the island of Malta.  But God had promised him that he would make it to Rome, the voyage would resume, and not even a serpent could prevent that from happening!

Today on Sound Doctrine we join pastor Jeff Johnson in Acts 27.  Paul is at sea and on his way to Rome with a couple hundred guys.  They encounter an enormous storm that lasted for fourteen days and end up on the island of Malta.  Pastor Jeff is going to relate this to the storm we’re facing right now, to help us respond to it in a God-honoring fashion.

Storms come and they go in our lives and at times they can feel like an unrelenting tsunami!  Maybe that thought has crossed your mind in the midst of the Pandemic.  It’s at times like these that we can start to wonder why?  In Acts 27 Paul is at Sea and onward to Rome when a 14 day storm hits.  He was diverted to the Island of Malta for a good reason.  We’re about to see how the shipwreck turns into surfing!

Do things seem to be spiraling out of control right now?  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll notice that God is very much in control in a crisis.  So if you’re wondering what is God doing in a crisis situation, or want to know the reasons behind the storms of life… keep listening.

We’ve got a helpful and encouraging lesson from Acts 27 for you today.  Like the people we’ll meet today, we’re in a crisis. But we don’t want you to miss what God is doing through is all.  And so pastor Jeff will draw attention to that, and show us that God is very much in control!

It seems like everyone has an opinion or thoughts about what’s going on right now in the present day crisis.  And they’re quick to share it virtually every day on social media.  But what is God’s Word to us in a crisis?  That’s really what we need to hone in on, and we will today on Sound Doctrine as pastor Jeff Johnson heads back to Acts twenty-seven.
