Discernment from God
Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman?” - 2 Samuel 3:8
Ishbosheth accused Abner of going into Saul’s concubines. In other words, he accused Abner of trying to take Saul’s position and power. That is what the next king would do. They would take over the last king’s concubines. Abner was shocked and angry with Ishbosheth’s accusation, “How dare he accuse him of disloyalty.”
Can you imagine the situation? Was Ishbosheth really crazy to think Abner was being disloyal to him? No, he was right. Abner’s actions proved he was loyal to himself. He was not loyal to Ishbosheth. In the last verse, it said Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul. This was not the action of a person who was submitted to Ishbosheth as the king.
Now, some say this was a false accusation, and Ishbosheth was just trying to get rid of Abner, because he was threatened by him. Whether the accusation was true or false, Ishbosheth was wise to fear Abner. He was trying to run the kingdom.
I really believe God was in control of this situation, and He was giving Abner discernment to see him as he really was, and when we walk closely with the Lord, He will give us discernment to know who we can trust and who is really our enemy—who is just using us.
True wisdom is a divine revelation.
